Rocket City Recap

A few off trail excursions

The Rocket City will soon be the largest city in our state! We have so much to do: Great restaurants, local brewpubs, outdoor entertainment and if you’re into history … Well, we know a little bit about space.

AND … We have four local bike shops and another one less than 30 minutes away in the quaint town of Mooresville.

Local Bike Shops

Sunset is the newest old bike shop in town. Purchased by two mechanics at the shop’s predecessor, Sunset continues to offer a large number of bike brands and service expertise to its customers. Stop in to say hi to their shop kitty and shop dogs and crew … Especially to local legend, Brooke Pate. He’s the one with the enviable beard and bike grease etched into his fingerprints.

Bicycle Cove has two locations: One close to Hampton Cove and the other in Madison, AL. Both are purveyors of Trek bicycles and a few other more boutique brands. Chris Leven and his team know their stuff. Chris landed in Huntsville to open his own shops after years of working at Cahaba Cycles in Birmingham, AL. Check out one or both locations.

Trailhead may have one of the coolest looking shops ever! Their floors literally ooze history because they are located in the historic Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment district. They know their stuff over there and, as an added bonus, because the Lowe Mill property was never annexed into the city, you only pay county tax (5.5%). Which means you save 4% on everything, every day! Not bad, huh?!

Mooresville, Alabama is charming … Just one of those towns ya gotta go see. But, Southern Carnage gives that charm a little edge! Their shop door opens up onto 30+ miles of gravel trail. Owner Jory was also one of the original HAMR Presidents and has done a ton of trail work over the years! SC also rent bikes for $40 a day.

To be perfectly honest, five years ago downtown Huntsville wasn’t much of a draw, but all of that has changed! Restaurants, brewpubs, fine dining, coffee shops, boutiques and more abound!
